(Atlanta, GA – June 17, 2013) Duke Realty Corp. (Duke Realty) announced today that it has started construction on a road extension project that will provide a new point of access onto Interstate 285 from Camp Creek Business Center in East Point, Ga. The 3,300-foot extension of North Commerce Drive in Camp Creek Business Center will include a newly signalized intersection at Washington Road providing immediate access to the Washington Road/I-285 interchange.
Developed and funded by Duke Realty at an investment of over $5 million, the North Commerce Drive extension is scheduled to be completed in third quarter 2013. The three-lane road will feature sidewalks, landscaping and overhead lighting.
“With this new project, Camp Creek Business Center will improve upon its already superior access to I-285,” said Chris Brown, Senior Vice President of Georgia Operations in Duke Realty’s Atlanta office. “Providing our current tenants and future customers with easy access to two I-285 interchanges will result in productivity gains for their businesses.”
Duke Realty’s 2.6-million-square-foot Camp Creek Business Center, located three miles from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, is a key business hub in East Point, housing diverse tenants such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Jaguar Land Rover North America, Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration. On June 1, Kuehne + Nagel Inc. will become the newest tenant in the business park when it celebrates the grand opening of its 211,000-square-foot build-to-suit facility. The warehouse/office building will serve as the company’s southeast U.S. headquarters.
“Camp Creek Business Center has proven to be a catalyst for economic development on the south side of Atlanta, with over 1,500 jobs housed in the park,” Brown said. “In addition to benefitting our park, this new road project will be a key regional transportation improvement and will drive additional economic development in the area.”
As part of its commitment to community improvement, Duke Realty has taken a leadership role with other area owners in the creation of the Airport West Community Improvement District (CID), which is expected to receive approval from the cities of East Point, College Park and Atlanta, and Fulton County in mid-June. CIDs provide funding for infrastructure and economic development projects through the voluntary participation of businesses that agree to pay increased taxes.
“The new CID will be instrumental in helping the Airport West area maximize its potential for economic development and higher quality of life,” said Natalie Martin, Senior Property Manager for Duke Realty and chair of the Camp Creek Parkway Improvement Association. “The CID will generate more than one million dollars annually and leverage additional funds from other sources to fund improvements for improved traffic flow, public safety improvements and services, among other projects. Duke Realty is excited to take part in this initiative to continue the economic development momentum in the Airport West area.”
