(Indianapolis, IN – May 1, 2018) Duke Realty associates in Indianapolis, along with associates from its 15 other offices nationwide, will install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, and help families create fire escape plans on Friday, May 4, 2018, as part of the American Red Cross “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” campaign. Indianapolis-based Duke Realty has designated this volunteer initiative for its Annual Day of Service, a time when its associates across the United States collectively get out of the office and lend a helping hand in the community.
Duke Realty volunteers in Indianapolis will gather at Christian Park located at 4200 English Avenue on the southeast side of Indianapolis at 8:00 a.m., assemble into three-person teams and then go door-to-door to homes in surrounding neighborhoods to equip them with life-saving warning devices and help prepare residents for evacuation in the event of a home fire. Their efforts will support the American Red Cross’ goal of installing 1,000 free smoke alarms in the Indianapolis area and 100,000 alarms in at-risk communities across the country between April 28 and May 13.
“The greatest disaster threat to American families is a home fire,” said Chad Priest, CEO at the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross Indiana. “In a typical year, home fires kill more people than all other natural disasters combined in the United States. For survivors who may have lost everything, a Red Cross volunteer is often among the first on the scene, offering emotional support, helping families find a place to stay, providing food and other vital supplies and assisting with recovery.”
“By partnering with the American Red Cross on their “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” campaign, Duke Realty associates will provide residents in the communities where we do business with a life-saving device and critical knowledge that will prove invaluable if a fire should occur in their residences,“ said Jenny Bean, Vice President in Duke Realty’s Human Resource Department. “With nearly 300 associates across the country dedicated to this effort, we will definitely impact awareness, plus potentially save lives. We can’t think of a more worthy cause with which to be involved.”
Since launching its home fire preparedness program in 2014, the American Red Cross and its partners have saved at least 416 lives, including 11 in Indiana.
